Unearthing Alternative Paths to Rediscover Joy, and Meaning

Welcome to Discover Alternative, a sanctuary for those looking to venture off the beaten path and make more intentional choices in their lives. My name is Dan Zook, and I’m excited to be your friendly companion on this journey of rediscovery, growth, and self-improvement. My story, like many of yours, begins within the confines of traditional societal norms but gradually veers into the exploratory terrains of alternative holidays, traditions, and ways to do things.

The Genesis: Traditional Upbringing and Frozen TV Dinners

I grew up within the structured walls of a Christian church, attending Christian elementary and junior high schools. This experience was sprinkled generously with frozen TV dinners, Taco Bell lunches (yes, I still have a soft spot for Crunchwrap Supremes), and soda. It was a life filled with rituals and routines that offered comfort but left little room for questioning. It’s not that questioning the status quo wasn’t allowed in my family or school. But rather, when I look back I remember an overwhelming feeling that we were on the right (and often only) path.

My Academic Explorations: Connecting the Dots Across Disciplines

My college journey at UCSB expanded my intellectual horizons. Majoring in Sociology with courses in religious studies and network theory, I found the tools to deconstruct the social fabric I had always taken for granted. My subsequent MBA in marketing data analytics taught me the value of data in understanding human behavior and purchasing decisions. I went further to acquire a certificate in permaculture, a pivot inspired by my desire to connect with the Earth and its cycles.

Career: Big Data, Agri-Tech, and the Turning Point

I began my professional life in big data and agriculture technology. During this phase, I spoke with thousands of farmer across the country, learning about the production of primary crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat in the USA. Intriguingly, I found myself enmeshed in a world driven by commercial interests rather than sustainability. Most American grain goes into animal feed, ethanol, and corn syrup—a revelation that disturbed me.

This discomfort propelled me towards a permaculture course. During the introductory session, a casual chat with a fellow student changed my perspective. While he shared his enriching hobbies like fine-tuning kombucha recipes and volunteering at local parks, I realized that my own free time was spent on activities that disconnected me from the Earth. As this blog is a judgement free zone, I’m not afraid to say that at the time I felt embarrassed to share how I used my free hours. I was mostly drinking/eating at restaurants, playing video games, binging new shows on Netflix, re-watching favorites like The Office, and going to the gym. That day, I resolved to evolve for the better. This transformation became a lifelong quest to uncover alternative traditions, hobbies, and to reconnect with both micro and macro environments around me.

Why This Blog Matters Now

Climate Change and the Need for Sustainable Choices

The Earth’s climate is irrevocably changing, making the need for sustainable, alternative ways to do things more urgent than ever. Nature, weather, and biodiversity have leapt to the forefront of our attention. Negative climate centric press often drowns out our potentially healthy and constructive options.

Religion: A Shift in Consciousness

Traditional organized religion is losing its allure and influence. This blog offers insights into alternative traditions and alternative holidays that can fill the spiritual void in a more inclusive and open-minded way.

Digital Isolation

Smartphones and digital platforms, although revolutionary, have also escalated loneliness and depression. It’s important for us globally to find common ground. Our common ground is literally the soil and nature that provides for us all.

Growing up in the Christian faith, I was taught that ours was the one true path. It was a revelation to discover the richness in other world religions, each offering unique perspectives and philosophies. I’ve learned to integrate these alternative traditions into my daily life, offering a more nuanced and enriched experience.

My journey to unearth alternative traditions has been transformative. I’ve sifted through history, embraced ancient practices, and tuned into environmental rhythms, helping to bring about a a stronger sense of equilibrium in my life.

My voracious appetite for knowledge led me to read and listen extensively. Often, I would dig deep into one topic, only to realize its interconnectedness with another. As one of my professors once said, “The more you learn, the more questions you should have.” In this blog, we’ll identify interconnected aspects of society, religion, culture, sustainability, and food/drink.
